Prevent
At Mount Pleasant Primary we are committed to safeguarding and protecting all pupils from harm, including the risks associated with radicalisation and extremism. We recognise that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and that schools have an important role to play in preventing children from being drawn into harmful or extremist ideologies.
We fulfil our statutory Prevent duty by promoting a safe, inclusive and respectful school community where pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, resilience and an understanding of different views and perspectives. Through our curriculum, assemblies, PSHE and wider school experiences, pupils learn about respect, tolerance, democracy, individual liberty and the importance of making safe and informed choices.
Staff and governors receive appropriate training to recognise the signs that a pupil may be vulnerable to radicalisation or extremist influence. Staff and governors understand the school’s procedures for raising concerns and know how to report and respond to safeguarding concerns promptly.
When concerns arise, we would follow our safeguarding and Prevent procedures and work with parents, carers and relevant external agencies where appropriate. This may include making a referral through local safeguarding arrangements or to the appropriate Channel process, where a child may benefit from additional support.
Our approach is based on early identification, appropriate support and partnership working. We aim to ensure that all pupils feel safe, valued and able to express their views, while developing the knowledge, skills and resilience they need to participate positively in life in modern Britain.
